An 80-year-old man visiting Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona died after his boat capsized on the Colorado River, according to rangers.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 25, while the man was on a commercial river trip near Fossil Rapid. After the boat overturned, he was thrown into the water. Despite efforts by his group and rangers to perform CPR, the man did not survive. His identity has not been released.
Rangers and the county’s medical examiner are investigating the incident, but no further details will be provided at this time.
This tragic event occurred on the same day that a hiker was found dead in the park after being swept away by a flash flood, as reported by McClatchy News.
So far this year, 11 people have died at the park, including three in a single week, according to KPCW. The park typically sees around 17 deaths annually, as reported by the New York Times.
